The number is only one part
Separate the familiar number, the carrier route that delivers a call, the application that rings and the person responsible for answering. A successful change to one does not establish the others. Existing greetings, queues, opening hours, voicemail messages and contact records need their own decisions. This guide concerns planning a provider change, not submitting a port request on your behalf.
Keep the current service until the transfer completes
CloudTalk’s current instructions require active accounts at both ends during porting. Do not equate an application receipt or proposed date with completion. Ask the receiving provider to identify the actual numbers included, the confirmed carrier status and any remaining dependencies. A placeholder inside a new dashboard is a place to prepare routing, not evidence that public callers reach it.
Write a small acceptance sheet
For each number, record its purpose, authorised owner, expected answering route, exception route and the evidence still needed. Use labels rather than private customer records in a planning worksheet. Confirm portability and contract implications with the providers; this publication cannot guarantee a number is transferable or determine legal ownership.
A fictional two-number office
An office transfers its main line but leaves a separate fax number outside the order. The new main-line greeting works, yet the old bundle may still support the fax service. The team checks both with its provider before cancelling anything. One successfully received call is useful evidence for that route, not permission to close every old service.
Draw the boundary before the order
Make four boxes on a sheet: number, carrier delivery, configured destination and answering responsibility. Put each open question under its actual box. An unresolved number registration belongs in the first; an unanswered shared mailbox belongs in the last. This prevents a supplier conversation about technical completion from accidentally becoming a promise about staff response. Add a separate box for services you are deliberately leaving behind. Ask the project owner to explain this sketch without opening a dashboard. If they cannot distinguish the proposed transfer from the work around it, clarify the scope before buying. Ofcom describes number portability as a regulated facility in the UK; that jurisdictional context is not a guarantee that a particular international number or service can move.
